There were some outstanding volleyball players on the floor at the Harker School Tournament last week, and Westmont's Jon Ng-Parish was one of them.
Ng-Parish was named to the all-tournament team at Harker after leading the Warriors to a championship in the Silver Division. The Westmont star joined Eric Meyer Scotts Valley, Scott Rogers of Mitty, Brett Naylan of St. Francis and Jonji Barber of Mt. Madonna on the all-tourney list. Matt Kiel of San Lorenzo Valley was named the tourney Most Valuable Player.
Ng-Parish sparked the Warriors to a come-from-behind 21-25, 25-14, 15-12 win over host Harker in the division title match. Westmont had earned its place in the finals by beating Lynbrook in a 25-23, 27-25 cliffhanger and Saratoga 25-17, 20-25, 15-9.
The Warriors, 6-7 for the year, were coming off of back-to-back league wins entering tourney play. Westmont had beaten Gunderson and Prospect earlier in the week in play in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Ng-Parish drilled 21 kills to the floor to lead the Warriors to a hard-earned 26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12 win over rival Prospect. Patrick Avila had 12 kills in the loss for the Panthers.
Martin Szczepaniak, Oli Phipps, Landen Jones and Keith Nyberg were others who played key roles in the Westmont win over Prospect. Stephen Derindiner, Alex Mendez, Joey Akeley and Jeff Sen played key roles for the Panthers.
Earlier in the week, Ng-Parish had 17 kills to lead the Warriors to an easy 25-9, 25-7, 25-20 win over Gunderson.
In other action, Sen had seven kills, but the Panthers lost a 25-9, 25-15, 25-18 non-league decision to Leigh.
Morris is perfect
She's done it before, and Whitney Morris did it again this season when she threw a perfect game to lead the Westmont girls softball team to an 8-0 win over Mountain View last week.
Morris was perfect for seven frames, retiring all 21 of the batters she faced. Her teammates supported her with 12 hits and rallied for three runs in the second and five in the third to clinch the win. Morris did much of the damage herself with a two-run double.
The win was the third straight for the Warriors, who had opened the year with a 7-1 victory over Prospect and then edged Wilcox 3-1. But Westmont suffered back-to-back losses, 5-2 to Gilroy and 3-1 to Monta Vista, before winning two more--8-2 over El Camino and 2-1 over North Salinas.
Senior left-hander Lillian Davis tossed a 3-hitter in the 3-1 win over Wilcox. The clubs matched runs in the third, but Westmont rallied for two in the fourth to give Davis the cushion she needed for the win.
The loss to Monta Vista came in the opening round of the Circle of Champions tournament last weekend. The Warriors scored a run in the first, but the Matadors came up with three in the second and that would be enough for the win. Robyn Araujo had two hits in the loss for Westmont.
Breanna Kuhny doubled twice to knock in a pair of runs and Morris tossed a 7-hitter to lead the Warriors to an 8-2 win over El Camino.
The Warriors improved to 5-2 for the year with a 2-1 win over North Salinas in the tourney. Araujo knocked in a pair of runs for Westmont.
The Warriors will open play in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this week. Westmont was to visit Leigh on Tuesday and the Warriors will host Santa Teresa on March 23, 3:30 p.m.
Zweigle a winner
Freshman Lauren Zweigle went the distance to flip a 2-hit shutout and lead the Del Mar softball team to a 10-0 win over Notre Dame-San Jose. Anna Myers, Kellene Condie and Zweigle each had two hits in the win for the Dons. Myers drove in three runs and Courtney Pollak knocked in a pair.
The Dons, 2-4 this season, were to host Evergreen on Tuesday and will visit Prospect on March 23, 3:30 p.m., for a Santa Teresa Division game.
